My 5-6 year old Miniature Dachshund named Bella blew a disc in her back in December 2014 and was paralyzed in her hind quarters (couldn't walk, stand and had no control over her bladder). This had happened to her once before and she recovered with anti-inflammatory medicine and strict cage rest. We tried this route again, but unfortunately she did not recover.
After 4 months of no improvement we were at wits end. We did not have the $4,000 for surgery, and at this point didn't even know if she was a candidate for surgery.
I began researching alternative treatments, and acupuncture was mentioned on several websites as a possibility. This led me to Dr. Niedermiller and MVS Animal Clinic of Deerfield Beach.
After two acupuncture treatments Bella can stand and walk again. She's still far from perfect, her gait is awkward, and she stumbles, but what a dramatic improvement. After the first treatment I thought she had improved a bit, but wasn't sure. Thought maybe I might be looking too hard and seeing what I wanted to see. But during the 2nd treatment, she stood up on the table and started wagging her tail.
Surely worth a try if you find your pet in a similar situation.
Several of you have asked me from time to time to recommend a veterinarian. After living in West Boca along US441 for 18 years and having gone thru a number of veterinarians (5) for various reasons, in the immediate area, I have finally found one who I can recommend without hesitation, Dr. Deborah A. Niedermiller DVM 954 425 0013 She is located at 18 Northeast 2nd Avenue, Deerfield Beach. In addition to her very competent, compassionate service, she has a very friendly and caring office staff who has often gone above and beyond to be of help. Don't let the address deter you. It is only a short 25 minute drive from West Boca for superior, reasonable service. She has treated three of our dogs, Bert Sammy and now Niko, over the past six years. If you are interested, MVS Animal Clinic has impeccable credentials.
And feel free to call me if you have any questions.
I have been a client of Dr. Niedermiller since 2011, when my ailing golden retriever was referred to her for veterinary acupuncture. This was a difficult time, and both her expertise and her compassion were very evident. She was willing to take the time to give my dog a thorough, careful evaluation and then discuss the results with me. She helped me consider several different courses of treatment, including referral to a veterinary neurologist, and I found her counsel invaluable. I was particularly impressed that she contacted me after my dog passed away to provide additional comfort.
I soon returned to her with my new puppy, and was impressed with the skill she demonstrated in examining a lively, squirming puppy, and her great familiarity with all the issues I was facing. In particular I appreciate her knowledge of Chinese herbs, which have been very useful in behavioral training. We have since returned several times for regular appointments and I continue to be very pleased with the quality of care my dog receives.
I have had dogs my whole life, and have had a great deal of experience with veterinarians. Dr. Niedermiller is one of the best I have ever encountered, and I highly recommend her and her practice.
